HSE First Aid at Work(Initial)

What are the aims of the First Aid At Work course?
To be able to demonstrate skills and knowledge in First Aid, in order to be safe, prompt and effective dealing with an incident in the workplace.
What skills or knowledge do I need to be able to attend?
No prior knowledge is needed but you should be capable of learning many new skills in a short space of time. There may also be a need to do a small amount of reading outside the course hours, on the first and second day of the course. This will depend on how confident you feel in the subjects covered during the day.

Who is this course suitable for?
It is a requirement for many employers to have staff qualified in this course. Also companies with staff that operate in a high-risk sector may require staff to be trained in this course. This course is also recommended for anyone with an interest in First Aid or having care responsibilities.

Course content

This course primarily covers essential life saving First Aid.

The course will include.

Day 1

• Defining First Aid
• The roll and responsibility of the First Aider
• Communicating with casualties
• Personal welfare
• Record keeping
• First Aid kits
• Action plan and Primary survey
• Recovery position
• Heart attack and Angina
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Day 2

• Recognising illness and injury
• Anaphylaxis
• Asthma attack
• Electric Shock
• Types of wound
• Internal and External bleeds
• Shock
• Burns & scalds
• Effects heat/cold

Day 3

• Foreign bodies
• Head and spinal injury
• Bone,Muscle and tendon injuries
• Poisoning
• Medical problems including diabetes / epilepsy / stroke
• Safe moving of casualty’s
• Occupational specific module

Course duration

Three days, usually 9.30am-4.30pm.

Assessment and certification

The course is continuously assessed by the trainer. Assessment will take place at the end of each module whereby the trainer must confirm that the delegates have understood each subject. This may be achieved by question & answers, practical assessment or through group work.

A certificate will be awarded on successful completion of the entire course.

Certificates are valid for three years.

HSE First Aid At Work (Refresher)

Only first aiders who have a ‘First Aid at Work’ certificate that has not expired by more than 7 days can attend this 2 Day First Aid at Work refresher Course.

This course covers vital theory and practical techniques for all aspects of first aid at work.
To provide a revision of all of the key points covered in the original First Aid at Work course.

Who is this course suitable for?

The course is suitable for all First Aiders who have successfully completed the First Aid at Work (3 day) course whose certification has recently expired or is due to expire.

Course contents

A full revision of the First Aid at Work course including practical scenarios to recap key points.

Course length

Two days
, usually 9.30am-4.30pm

Assessment and certification

This course is continually assessed by the trainer and assessment will take place at the end of each module.

A certificate will be issued on successful completion of the entire course.

Certificates are valid for 3 years.

First Aid Annual Skills update

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommend that all First Aiders have annual refresher training to maintain their skills and keep up to date with any changes between their initial training and requalifying three years later.

Who is this course suitable for?

This course is only for people with a valid First Aid at work or Emergency First Aid certificate, who wish to to refresh their First Aid skills through practical training.

Course content

The course will recap:

Unresponsive and breathing casualty, unresponsive and not breathing casualties, CPR and use of a defibrillator.

Choking

Bleeding and shock

Burns

Seizure

This course is not certified it is designed to keep you up to date with the current guidance and refresh your skills

HSE Emergency First Aid at Work

This course teaches essential first aid skills to ensure prompt and effective initial aid is provided in the event of a workplace emergency.

Who is this course suitable for?
This course is suitable for employees in small work places and for people that work in an environment that presents fewer health and safety risks. It is especially suited for nominated First Aiders.

Course content
The course primarily covers basic life saving first aid. The course will include.
• Health and safety (first aid) regulations
• Managing an incident
• The priorities of first aid
• Care of an unconscious casualty
• Cardiac arrest recognition and causes
• Resuscitation (CPR)
• Shock
• Bleeding
• Choking
• Seizures
• Other common injuries and medical conditions

One day

Assessment and certification
The trainer continually assesses this course.
A certificate will be awarded on successful completion of the entire course
Certificates are valid for three years
